About Gauhar Mahal (Gohar Mahal)

Gauhar Mahal, also spelled Gohar Mahal, is a historic three-storey palace on the banks of Bhopal’s Upper Lake, in the Peer Gate area on VIP Road, directly behind the well-known Shaukat Mahal. It was built in 1820 by Qudsia Begum popularly called Gohar Begum who became the first woman ruler of Bhopal after her husband was murdered in 1819, breaking with the era’s male-dominated succession. She used the palace as both a residence and a working seat of power, and moved here permanently in her later years once her daughter had taken over as ruler. Architecturally, it blends Hindu and Mughal styles across roughly 650 square metres of built-up area, with two courtyards the public Diwan-e-Aam and the more exclusive Diwan-i-Khas plus landscaped gardens and lawns; both courtyards are currently closed to visitors for safety reasons. Maintained today by the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department, the palace has lost some of its original grandeur over time but is undergoing restoration, and it now regularly hosts cultural events, art exhibitions and fairs, drawing visitors from across India and abroad.

Opening hours
Reported inconsistently across sources: 7:00 am–6:00 pm, 8:00 am–6:00 pm, or 10:00 am–5:00 pm, depending on the source. Confirm current hours directly before visiting.

Entry fee
Reported inconsistently: several sources say entry is free, while others cite ₹20-25 for Indian visitors and ₹200-250 for foreign visitors (with children under 15 sometimes free). Confirm the current, accurate fee at the entrance this is a genuine discrepancy worth resolving before publishing, not just a minor rounding difference.

Best time to visit
October to March offers the most pleasant weather for exploring the lakeside grounds. Early morning or late afternoon visits are recommended to avoid crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures and better light for photography.

Best for
Heritage and architecture enthusiasts, photographers, history lovers interested in Bhopal’s Begum-era rulers, and visitors attending one of the palace’s periodic cultural events, exhibitions or fairs.
