Almost everyone knows the iconic and landmark tourist places in Bhopal. But what if you were told about 11 hidden places that most people may not know about? 1. Golghar Museum

This museum is often overlooked when it competes for attention with the Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum or State Museum. However, Golghar Museum displays the history and culture of the Nawabs. It was built by Nawab Shah Jahan Begum and has on display old photographs, costumes, decorative pieces and old artefacts. Also, the unique circular design of the museum building is noteworthy. 

2. Jagdishpur

Jagdishpur is a village about 12 km from the city centre. Earlier known as Islamnagar, it was once the capital of Bhopal city during the Nawab rule. The village is home to historical palaces and gardens. The Chaman Mahal and Rani Mahal, situated next to each other, are a mix of Mughal and Rajput architecture. Visitors can also walk in the sprawling gardens and an ancient hamam. 

3. Chinar Park

Chinar Park may seem like an unassuming green space in the city. But it is a good place to enjoy a family picnic or evening walk. Also, there are installations and models in the park that are made using scrap metal and automobile parts. The kids’ play area keeps the children busy, while adults can enjoy a relaxed few hours here. 

4. Udayagiri Rock Shelters

The Udayagiri Rock Shelters are around 2 hours away from Bhopal. But for travellers interested in rock art, it is worth the drive. Carved in the 5th century, there are about 20 rock-cut temples. The sculpture of Vishnu in his incarnation Varaha is a stunning artistic expression. Also, besides the temples, there are inscriptions, water systems, and other remains that visitors can explore.

5. Rani Kamlapati Palace

This palace is built as a symbol of love. It was constructed by the Gond ruler Nizam Shah for his queen Rani Kamlapati. Located on the bridge connecting the Upper and Lower Lakes, the palace is built with Lakhauri bricks. Visitors can admire the fluted pillars, arches, carvings and architecture of the palace.

6. Raja Bhoj Statue

The statue of the Parmar king Raja Bhoj is placed in the waters of the Upper Lake. A 32-foot-tall bronze monument, it is dedicated to the legendary king, who was also a patron of arts and a scholar. The statue is along the popular VIP Road where visitors can enjoy a stroll or drive. They can also take photos of this landmark, looking especially regal, during sunset. 

7. Satdhara Stupa

An ancient archaeological Buddhist site, the Satdhara Stupa is about 40 km from the city. Situated along the Halali River, it is often skipped by tourists who visit Sanchi Stupa. However, there is one large and many small stupas with narrow paths connecting them all. Tranquil and surrounded by quiet green landscapes, this hidden place is one that must not be missed. 

8. Moti Masjid

The Taj-ul-Masjid is the most popular mosque in Bhopal. However, Moti Masjid or Pearl Masjid, is also a splendid attraction that tourists can visit. Built from white marble, there are two red sandstone towers on either side of the mosque. Though inspired by the Jama Masjid in Delhi, it is smaller in size. 

9. Delawadi

An eco-tourism area, Delawadi is located within the Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary. It is only about 50 km from Bhopal and can be easily visited in a single day. Tourists can also choose to stay for a few days in the jungle camps or retreats nearby. A quiet getaway from the busy city, the sanctuary also has a few temples. 

10. The Bodhi Tree

About 8 km from Sanchi Stupa, the Bodhi Tree (a peepal tree), guarded by a net and security guards. Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa planted it in 2012. The tree was planted from a sapling of the original Bodhi Tree associated with Gautam Buddha. Visitors can enjoy the scenic views and surrounding landscapes while visiting this unique attraction. 

11. Manuabhen Tekri

The Manuabhen Tekri is a hilltop on which a sacred Jain Temple is located. It is also one of the highest points in the city. A ropeway ride takes visitors to the top of the hill for an aerial view of the city. Tourists can watch the iconic lakes, Bhopal Airport and several buildings sprawled across the city from atop.
