The Upper and Lower Lakes are defining landmarks of Bhopal. Though interconnected to form an important wetland system, each is also a major tourist destination in its own right. But if one had to choose between the two, the Upper Lake has the edge.
Larger in size and cleaner, the Upper Lake offers more attractions and activities for visitors to enjoy. The Lower Lake also has its own share of things to do. But for travellers on a tight itinerary, visiting the Upper Lake is a better choice.
Upper Lake
The Upper Lake is a man-made lake and one of the oldest in India. Built by Paramara King Raja Bhoj in the 11th century, it is also known as Bhojtal or Bada Talab. Located on the western side of the city, it is a major source of drinking water for Bhopal. However, besides its functional uses, the lake is also a much-loved recreational area for visitors.
Things to do in Upper Lake
There are several developed stretches along the lakefront where visitors can enjoy a range of activities. From promenades and boating to relaxing in parks and birdwatching, there are plenty of things to do.
Leisure Walks, Lake View and Sunsets
The Lake View Promenade is an approximately 2.5 km walking area along the lakefront. It provides beautiful views of the lake and the surrounding cityscape. Visitors can walk, jog, or relax along the lakefront while enjoying the cool breeze and scenic views. The iconic Raja Bhoj Statue, standing tall amidst the lake waters, can also be seen from here. Besides, the sunset is a good time to take photographs and enjoy snacks or a meal at the cafes and food kiosks nearby.
Boating and Water Sports
If there is a sprawling lake in the heart of the city, what are the odds that it has boating? Well, the odds are very high and obvious. Boating in the Upper Lake is one of the most popular things to do in the city. The Boat Club, located on Lake View Road, is the hub of most boating and water sports activities. Visitors can choose paddle boating or row boats with drivers. Besides, parasailing and jet skiing are also available depending on the season.
Kamala Park
Kamala Park is located on the shores of the Upper Lake near the Raja Bhoj Setu, or bridge that divides both lakes. The large green space is like a breath of fresh air in Bhopal’s busy urban landscape. Visitors can enjoy the lake views, picnic or walk, jog and do yoga in the mornings and evenings.
Sair Sapata
Located on the banks of the Upper Lake, Sair Sapata is a fun destination, especially for children. The suspension bridge, a major attraction, offers splendid views of the lake. The toy train ride is particularly enjoyable. So are other adventures, such as car dashing and zorbing. The entertainment park also offers boating. Besides, there is a children’s play area, a musical fountain and several food kiosks.
Van Vihar National Park
Interestingly, a part of the Upper Lake lies within the boundaries of the Van Vihar National Park. About 50 hectares of the southern side of the lake is a part of the park, providing a flourishing wetland ecosystem. The Van Vihar National Park is home to a large number of flora and wildlife. The lake itself provides shelter to waterbirds, turtles and crocodiles. Safari rides, birdwatching, hiking and cycling along the lake are some of the best ways to explore the park.
Lower Lake
Lower Lake is also known as Chhota Talab. It is to the east of the Upper Lake and is separated from it by a bridge, the Pul Pukhta. This lake was built by Nawab Chhote Khan in 1794, many years after the creation of the Upper Lake. Also, its waters are primarily used for recreational purposes and fishing. Unlike the Upper Lake, the Lower Lake receives a large part of the sewage and drainage from the city. The waters are hence polluted and not used for drinking.
However, the Lower Lake is still an integral part of the wetland system. Visitors can enjoy lake views, birdwatching and photographing sunsets and picturesque surroundings. Also, boating is one of the main attractions here. The Lower Lake Boat Club provides different boating options that visitors can choose from.
Moreover, there are local parks that surround the Lower Lake, such as Neelam Park and Kilol Park. The parks are relaxing venues, surrounded by natural calmness and peace.
Why Choose Upper Lake?
The Upper Lake has some of the prominent landmarks, such as the Raja Bhjo Statue, Sair Sapata, Van Vihar National Park and the promenade. The Lower Lake may not have iconic attractions, but it is quieter and less crowded. Also, boating, birdwatching and enjoying the scenic views are common to both lake areas. Yet, the Upper Lake edges forward due to the tourist spots, as well as its clean waters and well-maintained surroundings.
Both lakes create a vital wetland ecosystem that supports a diverse range of flora and fauna. Together known as the Bhoj Wetland, it is also recognised as a Ramsar site. The biodiversity, ecology and its subsequent influence on the city and region are unquestionable. However, when it comes to tourism, the Upper Lake is the clear winner.
