7. Tribal Museum

This is not a quintessential museum. Instead of just displays and exhibits, the Tribal Museum has recreated tribal homes. You can walk inside the house of Bhil or Gond and discover its belongings. The museum also has musical instruments and agricultural tools used by the local tribes. Through sculptures and installations, the gallery section showcases festivals and rituals.

8. Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya

This anthropological museum is also known as the National Museum of Mankind. For those interested in tribal culture, this is another centre to visit besides the Tribal Museum. However, IGRMS has more to offer. Traditional homes in different environments and exhibits on rituals, human evolution, cosmology and folk art are some of the other things to explore here.

9. Bharat Bhawan

Bharat Bhawan is a museum and cultural centre. It overlooks the Upper Lake and hosts various theatre, music and dance performances. The Roopankar Art Museum has a collection of paintings, sculptures, Indian, tribal and folk art. Vagarth is a centre for Indian poetry, as the Bhawan also hosts literary and poetry readings.

10. Shaukat Mahal and Sadar Manzil

Situated adjacent to each other, these royal buildings are near Chowk Bazaar. Both the buildings are now used as government offices. But their architecture and design reflect Indo-Saracenic heritage. They are worth visiting because they look different from the dominant Indo-Islamic buildings.

11. Chowk Bazaar

For those who enjoy soaking in the culture of an old city, a visit to the Chowk Bazaar is a must. It is one of the oldest markets in the city and offers a wonderful variety of goods. Ranging from traditional local shops to textiles, jewellery, household items and handicrafts- you name it, and you can buy it here. Also, this is a good place to try out local street foods, such as poha, samosa and jalebi.

12. Sanchi Stupa

The Sanchi Stupa is about an hour and a half’s drive away from the city centre. It is worth a visit, especially because it is the oldest stone structure in India. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can admire the Great Dome, Toranas and the Ashoka Pillar here.

13. Bhimbetka Rock Shelters

The Bhimbetka Rock Shelters are about 45 km from the city. Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is renowned for the prehistoric cave paintings. Out of the 750 cave shelters, almost 450 caves have paintings made by hunters and gatherers who lived in the Mesolithic period. There are paintings of animals, everyday rituals, hunting, dancing and social activities. Giving an insight into what life was like in those times, these rock shelters are worth a visit.

14. Raisin Fort

This is another landmark destination about 45 km from the city. The Raisin Fort is built on a sandstone hill. This majestic structure has thick walls, palaces, temples, a Sufi shrine and getaways. 15. Kerwa Dam
