Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication (MCNUJC), commonly called MCU or Makhanlal Vishwavidyalaya, is a public state university and India’s first dedicated university for journalism and mass communication. Named after Makhan Lal Chaturvedi, a poet, editor and freedom fighter from Madhya Pradesh, it was established in 1990 (some sources cite 1992 for its formal legislative establishment) by the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. Its main campus operates from Bishankhedi (Makhanpuram), Bhopal, opposite the M.P. State Shooting Academy, with additional campuses in Datia, Rewa and Khandwa. Unusually for an Indian state university, MCU has nationwide jurisdiction rather than a limited territorial one, and it offers only full-time programs, no distance education. It runs 12 departments covering Journalism, Broadcast Journalism, Advertising & Public Relations, Electronic Media, New Media, Computer Applications, Media Management and Communication Research, with morning courses (BA, MA, MPhil, PhD) and evening job-oriented PG Diploma courses. The Vice President of India serves as the university’s Visitor, and the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh chairs its General Council.
